Five men – Ahmed Adeyemi, Nnamdi Victor, Simon Udenze, Olaleye Monday and John Uche – have been arraigned before an Ebute Meta Magistrate’s Court for allegedly fighting with charms.
It was learnt that the defendants were area boys who had accosted some tanker drivers in the Orile area and demanded for money.
When their request was turned down, they allegedly unleashed mayhem in the area.
They were said to have fought with machetes, broken bottles and charms.
In the ensuing scuffle, two tanker drivers, identified as Segun Adojutelegun, and Okanlawon Yinusa, were said to have been cut on the head with matchete.
The incident was said to have occurred at White Sand tankers’ terminal in the Orile area of Lagos State.
The police told the court that not only did the affray constituted disturbance of public peace, it also put people in the neighbourhood in mortal fear of the unknown.
The defendants were arraigned on seven counts.
The charges read in part, “That you, Ahmed Adeyemi, Nnamdi Victor, Simon Udenze, Olaleye Monday, John Uche, and others now at large on November 23, 2013 at 10.30am, at White Sand tankers’ terminal Orile Lagos, in the Lagos Magisterial District, did conspire among yourselves to commit offences to wit; being armed.
“That you did keep for yourselves assorted fetishes suspected to be criminal charms which are reputed to possess power to criminals and hoodlums or any other persons planning to commit crime.”
The prosecutor, George Nwosu, said the offences were punishable under Sections 409, 51, 44(1), 171, 166(1)(d), 133(a)(b) of the Criminal Law of Lagos State, Nigeria, 2011.
The defence counsel, Beauty Otigiah, applied for the bail of the defendants in liberal terms.
The magistrate, Mr. Tunbosun Abolarinwa, admitted them to bail in the sum of 200,000 with two sureties each in like sum.
The matter was adjourned till November 29.
