Babalakin’s absence stalls re-arraignment

The scheduled re-arraignment of the Chairman of Bi-Courtney Limited,  Dr. Wale Babalakin, was stalled before a Lagos High Court in Ikeja on Wednesday.

The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission had  charged  Babalakin and Alex Okoh with fraudulent transfer of about N4.7bn on behalf of the convicted former governor of Delta State,  James Ibori.

A lawyer, Mr. Mobolaji Kuti, representing Babalakin, only came when the court, presided over by Justice Lateef Lawal-Akapo, was at the verge of adjourning the matter due to the absence of his client.

But Okoh and his lawyer were present in court from the beginning of the proceedings.

EFCC counsel, Mr. Rotimi Jacobs (SAN), expressed disappointment with Babalakin’s absence.

Jacobs said, “At the last (adjourned) day, the junior counsel in Babalakin’s chambers was in court and we both agreed on this date. I am surprised that today they were not in court on the ground that it was not convenient.

“As it is now, the matter will have to be adjourned.”
