Manchester United have confirmed the signing of young defender Guillermo Varela from Uruguayan club Atletico Penarol.
The two clubs agreed an undisclosed fee for the 20-year-old, who spent the final few weeks of last season on trial with the Premier League champions.
Varela will join up with the United squad after featuring for Uruguay in the forthcoming FIFA U20 World Championship in Turkey.
He becomes the first signing for United since David Moyes replaced Sir Alex Ferguson as manager at Old Trafford.
Sky Sports revealed earlier this week that Varela was set to finalise a move to Old Trafford.
