NLC pickets Jos Electricity Distribution Company

NLC says the Jos Electric Distribution Company reneged on its earlier agreement with the workers.
The Nigeria Labour Congress, NLC, on Wednesday picketed the Jos Electricity Distribution Company over alleged de-unionisation of its workers.
The state NLC Chairman, Jibril Bancir, said in Jos that the congress is picketing the company because it reneged on its earlier agreement with the management over the workers.
Mr. Bancir said the congress had appealed to the company’s management not to tamper with the status quo until all staff issues were amicably settled. He announced that the protest at the Jos Electricity
Distribution office would last for seven days, saying the NLC will permanently seal off the office if the distribution company does not fulfil the agreement it made with its members.
The NLC boss also told Journalists that over 1,000 former employees have not been paid their outstanding entitlements since November 2013.
Other issues being contested include casualisation and under payment of workers, arbitrary increase of electricity tariff, sack of union leaders after legitimate struggle for workers’ rights and non-metering
of electricity customers.
PREMIUM TIMES also gathered that the action by the NLC was being carried out at the same time in Gombe, Bauchi, Nasarawa and Benue states, which make up the Jos electricity distribution office.
The poor power distribution in Plateau has been on increase since the formal handover of PHCN to private owners in November 2013.
