NHRC releases 2013 police station assessment result
The National Human Rights Commission on Tuesday released the result of the 2013 police station assessment exercise.
A summary of the result shows that the Karu Police Station, Abuja, came first among 369 police stations in 21 police state commands assessed in the exercise by surprisingly scoring 100 per cent.
The police stations were evaluated under five indicator areas, including community orientation, physical conditions, equal treatment of the public, transparency and accountability, and detention conditions.
Members of public, who were present at an event where the NHRC released the result at its national headquarters in Abuja expressed surprise when it was reported that Karu Police Station scored 100 per cent in all five indicator areas.
Nine other police stations, who finished alongside Karu Police Station in the top 10 ranks in the assessment exercise, also recorded remarkably high scores.
These are Ilupeju Police Station, Lagos, which came second with 97.33 per cent; Ikoyi Police Station, Lagos, 96 per cent; Adatan Police Station, Ogun State, 95.33 per cent; Victoria Island Police Station, Lagos, 94.33 per cent; and New Haven Police Station, Enugu, 93.67 per cent.
Other police stations in the top 10 are Badagry Police Station, Lagos, and Life Camp Police Station, Abuja, 92.33 per cent; Ijanikin Police Station, 91.33 per cent; Airport Command Police Station, Uyo, Akwa Ibom State, and Trade Fair Police Station, Lagos, 91 per cent, and Birnin Kudu Police Station, Jigawa State, 87.67 per cent.
The Executive Secretary of the NHRC, Prof. Bem Angwe, who announced the result, explained that the Commission deployed its staff, local community citizens and groups to visit the 369 police stations in the course of the exercise.
According to him, 1115 visitors participated in the visits to police stations in Abia, Federal Capital Territory, Akwa Ibom, Anambra, Bauchi, Ebonyi, Enugu, Gombe, Imo, Jigawa, Kaduna, Kano, Katsina, Lagos, Nasarawa, Niger, Ogun, Oyo, Plateau, Rivers and Zamfara States.
The NHRC also commended eight other police stations which established effective platforms for interactive community policing.
They are Orile Police Station, Lagos; Chanchage Police Station, Niger; Ikono Police Station, Akwa Ibom; Umuezeala Police Station, Imo; Adeniji Adele Police Station, Lagos; Gusau Police Station, Zamfara; Isokoko Police Station, Lagos; and Victoria Island Police Station, Lagos.
