Governor of Borno State Alhaji Kashim Shettima said on Tuesday that Boko Haram sect is a "child" of misinterpretation of the Holy Qur'an and misconception of Islam.
He spoke while receiving the Board for Qur'anic Education in the state, who brought winners of the 2014 National Qur'anic Competition held in Dutse, Jigawa State, before him.
The governor strongly condemned terrorist activities of the sect and said Islam does not allow killing of innocents and destruction of properties. Islam is a peaceful religion and does not condone violence in any form.
The insurgents, according to him, misunderstood the Holy Qur'an and Islam, unleashing unjust and unlawful terror terror on Nigerians.
The governor noted: "If we have had good understanding of Islam we would have been in a better state than now."
