Police oppose serial fraud suspect’s suit against arrest

The police on Tuesday urged a Federal High Court in Lagos to dismiss a suit filed by a serial fraud suspect, Mr. Oluwaseun Ogunbambo, who is seeking an injunction to restrain them from arresting him for fresh N1.3bn fuel subsidy fraud charges.

Counsel representing the police, Mr. Dania Abdullai, in opposing the suit, said the applicant was only “seeking all means to prevent the police from carrying out their statutory duties.”

The Inspector-General of Police, Mr. Mohammed Abubakar, is the only respondent in the suit, which is before Justice Mohammed Yunusa.

The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission is currently prosecuting Ogunbambo for a number of fuel subsidy and bank fraud charges before the Lagos High Court.

The suspect had approached the Federal High Court, Lagos, to challenge the declaration by the police on November 28, 2013, that he was being wanted for charges of fuel subsidy fraud without any evidence linking him to the alleged crime.

Ogunbambo was declared wanted by the police to, along with others, face charges of fraudulent collection of about N1.3bn from the Federal Government under the fuel subsidy scheme in December 2011.
