Gunmen abduct EFCC suspect in Lagos court

A suspect of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission, Princewill Nwobodo, was on Thursday abducted by unknown gunmen at a Lagos High Court.

The Head of Media and Publicity of the EFCC, Mr. Wilson Uwujaren, said in a statement on Friday that the suspect, Nwobodo, was abducted by four gunmen at the Lagos High Court, Igbosere.

He said that the suspect was brought to court from Ikoyi prisons and was abducted by the gunmen from the Prison warders who took him to court.

Uwujaren said that the abducted suspect was arraigned before Justice Aishat Opesanwo, on a four-count charge of obtaining $92,000 under false pretence in a case being handled by the EFCC.

The EFCC spokesman said that the arraignment of the suspect was postponed to March 27, 2014 because the court did not sit.

He said that Nwobodo had been arraigned earlier for fraud-related offences before Justice Saliu Seidu of the Federal high Court, Lagos on a 15-count charge which borders on conspiracy and obtaining money under false pretence.

According to him the accused pleaded not guilty and was granted bail but had to remain in prison for failing to meet the bail conditions under his abduction on February 20, 2014.

Uwujaren also said that the suspect who was arraigned in the second case before Justice Aishat Opesanwo, alongside two others, Katchy Okoye and Mathew Usong, on similar charges bordering on conspiracy and obtaining money under false pretence pleaded not guilty and was granted bail  but had to remain in prison as he could not meet the conditions for the bail.
