National Human Rights Commission has invited Rivers State Governor, Mr. Rotimi Amaechi, over his petition in which he alleged the deteriorating human rights situation in the state. The governor is to “to attend an initial investigative meeting” on October 18 to explain his allegations against the Commissioner of Police in the state, Mr. Joseph Mbu, who is to appear on an undisclosed date.
The NHRC, in a statement by its Director, Public Affairs and Communication, Muhammad Ladan, said, “Pursuant to Section 6 of
the NHRC Amended Act 2010 therefore, the Commission has
admitted the said petition for investigation as the issues raised
therein, if true, border on violation of fundamental rights.
“The presence of the complainant
is necessitated by the need to avail the commission’s panel of
investigators the opportunity to interact with him and obtain
any evidence that he may have to substantiate the claims he made in the petition.”
