Jonathan, Amaechi not at war — Presidency
In a dramatic twist, the Presidency declared, yesterday, that there was no rift between President Goodluck Jonathan and the Rivers State Governor, Chibuike Rotimi Amaechi.
Special Adviser on Political Matters to the President, Alhaji Ahmed Gulak, told Vanguard in an interview that the seeming face-off between Jonathan and Amaechi was a media creation.
Gulak’s reaction came barely 24 hours after Jonathan and Amaechi met at the Port Harcourt International Airport, embraced and exchanged pleasantries, the first of such encounter in a couple of months.
The frosty relationship of the duo reached a crescendo, last Wednesday night, when a willing Amaechi, who had called off a meeting of the Nigeria Governors’ Forum, to honour a dinner date at the Presidential Villa, was prevented by security men from shaking hands with Jonathan.
But all that changed when the two men met at the Port Harcourt Airport on Saturday, when they appeared to have made up at least, as their non-verbal gestures suggested.
Gulak said: “Jonathan and Amaechi are brothers and they are not fighting as some people are saying. I have never believed there was a crisis between the two brothers.
“Let me tell you, the President that I know and has been working with is a man of peace who takes all the governors, including Amaechi as his friends and there is no need for anyone to say that there is a feud between the President and Amaechi. The seeming friction between the duo is nothing but a media creation,” the Presidential aide said.
The political adviser dismissed as untenable the claim that the President was opposed to Amaechi’s leadership of the NGF, pointing out that Jonathan had no interest in the forum, which he described as a mere association that does not have a place in the Nigerian Constitution.
Reacting to the rejection of the Budget Amendment Bill by the National Assembly, Gulak described the development as a setback to Nigeria and its people.
According to him, the budget was not about Jonathan but about the country and its people, whose wellbeing was tied to the budget.
“Anybody who thinks that the budget is about President Jonathan does not understand the issues. Jonathan means well for the nation and it is unfair to treat the budget that caters for the people the way it is done,” the aide pointed out.
It will be recalled that the House of Representatives on Tuesday threw out the budget amendments being sought by the President to rejig the 2013 fiscal document, hinging its action on poor procedure by the Presidency

Why We Could Not Expose Lagos Council Boss Kidnappers - Neighbours
The peace enjoyed by residents of Idomila community, located off Agbara Igbesa area of Ogun State, was, in the early hours of Monday, suspended following sporadic gun shots which jolted the residents from sleep.
The gun shots, described as one of the worst in the history of the community, were initially concluded to be from robbers. But when the dust settled, it was discovered to be a gun duel between operatives of Anti-Robbery Squad, SARS, Ikeja and suspected members of a notorious kidnap syndicate that used a building in the community as hideout.
At the end of the gun battle, seven suspected kidnappers were killed and two taken alive, in army uniform, with the recovery of four AK 47 rifles, 28 AK 47 magazines fully loaded, more than 1,000 rounds of AK- 47 live ammunition, army uniforms and two vehicles - a Honda CRV SUV with number plate ABC 106 AE and a Nissan Pathfinder SUV with number plate AGL 730 AZ.
The alleged kidnappers; according to the police, were responsible for the abduction of the Ejigbo Local Council Development Area boss, Mr Kehinde Bamigbetan, two months ago and a Federal High Court judge, who was on a visit to Lagos..
Investigation revealed that one of the suspects, alleged to be the gang leader and one of those killed during the police operation, Jonah Benjamin Osinachi, rented the three-bedroom bungalow in March, 2013. The building is situated on the outskirts of Idomila, with some uncompleted buildings around it.
Osinachi, popularly known as China, reportedly did not not stay in the apartment which gates, neighbuors said, were always shut. But three suspected members of the gang were reportedly always indoors.
Further investigation revealed that while some of the residents, majority of whom are farmers and traders, were suspicious of the activities of occupants of the building, they could, however , not place their fingers on the exact business they were into. On the other hand, some of them, who claimed to be aware they could be into kidnapping, could not disclose this to security operatives for fear of reprisal.
One of the residents, who spoke on phone, said: "Their arrest did not come to some of us as a surprise. This is because we had always known they were into kidnapping but were afraid to report to them to the police for fear of being killed. They usually drove out at odd hours , say about 12 midnight and returned about three hours later. After that, the gates would not be opened until the next morning when they would drive out again. After two to three days, we won't see them again until about two weeks later".
Corroborating this claim, Lagos State Commissioner of Police , Mr Umar Manko, disclosed that members of the gang lived in Ghana but only came to Lagos to perpetrate their heinous activities.
"Remember when the Ejigbo LCDA chairman was kidnapped, I promised Lagosians we were going to arrest the kidnappers. We later got information that these kidnappers were based in Ghana and all efforts to arrest them in Ghana failed because the country had her procedure and they insisted we could not just go there to make any arrest", Manko told journalists.
"We went to Ghana with a team of international policemen, INTERPOL, but, after 31 days without a headway, our policemen returned to Nigeria.
"Based on painstaking follow-up and surveillance in tracking these kidnappers, men of the Special Anti-Robbery Squad (SARS) discovered their hideout in Agbara two weeks ago. The Commander of SARS, Mr Abba Kyari, led a team of crack detectives to a suburb in Agbara where the kidnappers had their camp. "After 72 hours of waiting in ambush, the men cordoned off the area, then stormed the house where all the kidnappers gathered around 3 am".
The suspected kidnappers, it was learnt, only visited Nigeria on weekends when they lodged in hotels close to the area. Then they would storm Lagos, abduct their victims and take them to their camp at Agbara where those resident in the flat would take over. The remaining six members would, thereafter, leave for the hotel, from where they would call relatives of their victims demanding for ransom. When ransom is paid, they would blindfold their victims and drive them to another part of Ogun State where they would drop them. After any successful operation, they would leave for Ghana where they would share their loot.

Actor, 3 Others Arrested For Abducting Monarch’s Wife
Ismaila Dauda, a 27-year-old secondary school dropout, has been arrested by the Ogun State Police Command for an alleged abduction of traditional ruler's wife.
Ismaila, a fledgling actor, from Ondo, was accused of attempting to abduct the wife of the traditional ruler of Ilisan Remo in March 2013, with the help of three others: Segun, Nurudeen and an unidentified man.
Nevertheless, Dauda stated he was not aware that he was part of a gang of kidnappers until it was too late.
Dauda pleaded, "At the time, I was not aware that it was a planned abduction. Segun is a close friend and had borrowed my car. Because the car was without a spare tyre and not in good condition, I offered to drive him wherever he wanted.
"I was under the impression that Segun was in search of a suitable school for his teaching practice as he is a student of a College of Education."
The suspects, Dauda, Segun and Nurudeen, allegedly left Ondo, while a fourth unidentified man was picked up at Ore. Under Segun's direction, Dauda allegedly drove to a secondary school close to the palace of the Oba of Ilisan in Ogun State.
At about 1pm, an elderly lady was said to have driven out of the school compound and headed in the direction of the king's palace.
Dauda said, "At the time, I was unaware that she was the king's wife. By the time she came to where we were parked, she stopped because my car was blocking her path. To my shock, Segun and Nurudeen rushed to her vehicle, brandishing guns and pulled her out. Till that moment, I had had no idea that they had guns in their possession."
The victim was bundled into Dauda's car and driven away. Some residents, however, raised the alarm and alerted the police after witnessing the abduction.
"It seemed Segun had stationed some spies around because while I was driving, he received a call that the police had already begun to give a chase behind us and that the neighbourhod vigilantes had mobilised ahead of us to block our escape.
"Immediately, I heard that, I could no longer drive. I was so scared, I had to drive off the road into the bush and we abandoned my car there with the king's wife in it," Dauda recalled.
Dauda and his friends, allegedly hid in the bush till 7pm until Segun's spies showed up and took them all to an uncompleted building at the Ijebu-Ode end of Sagamu-Benin Expressway. The suspects were said to have hidden there till 6.30am the following day, when a vehicle arrived to convey them back to Ondo state.
Mr. Muyiwa Adejobi, an Ogun State Police Public Relations officer, confirmed the incident, "The victim was rescued from the car unhurt although some pepper had been sprayed into her eyes to prevent her from identifying where she was to be held captive.
"All the suspects escaped from the scene. In their haste, a sim card belonging to Dauda was left in the car.
"Dauda was tracked to his home in Ondo State but he had gone into hiding in his hometown, Iwo. It wasn't until May 19 that Dauda returned home and he was promptly arrested by the Fagun Police Division and later transferred to the State Criminal Investigative Department, Abeokuta. Investigation is on to apprehend the other fleeing suspects."

Tinubu Under Attack!
National leadership of Peoples Democratic Party, PDP, yesterday, described the national leader of Action Congress of Nigeria, ACN, Asiwaju Bola Tinubu, as a despot for imposing his daughter, Mrs. Folashade Tinubu-Ojo, as President-General of the Association of Nigerian Market Women and Men.
The party said Folashade Tinubu-Ojo was not a full-time trader and cannot on that note succeed Tinubu's mother, late Alhaja Abibat Mogaji.
In a statement, yesterday, by PDP's Acting National Publicity Secretary, Tony Caesar Okeke, the party also lampooned the leadership of ACN for asking President Goodluck Jonathan to probe reports that security operatives prevented Rivers State governor, Chibuike Amaechi, from personally exchanging pleasantries with him at a dinner at the Presidential villa last Wednesday.
Okeke described the demand by the ACN as "irresponsible, meddlesomeness and foolish scandal-mongering."
He said ACN and its co-traveller, Congress for Progressive Change, CPC, were merely embittered by the reconciliations in the PDP and were, as such, crying wolf where there was none.
Stating that such protocol issues were understood by all, PDP said ACN and CPC had, over time, showed that they were quarrelsome parties which derived pleasure in causing disaffection among Nigerians.
He said: "The ACN and the CPC are merely embittered by the reconciliations so far achieved in the PDP and seek to use all means to undermine it. That is why they are crying wolf where there is none. Protocol issues are understood all over the world. Therefore the demand by the ACN smacks of irresponsible meddlesomeness and foolish scandal-mongering aimed at causing disaffection among our leaders and party members."
The party said President Goodluck Jonathan had a good relationship with all state governors, including that of Rivers State, and commended him for the reconciliations so far achieved in the PDP.
On Tinubu, the PDP said the ACN leader, "who parades himself as a democrat" has clearly shown his despotic tendencies, with the installation of his daughter as the leader of traders without recourse to democratic processes. Nigerians have clearly seen that the so-called democrats and self-styled messiahs in the ACN are, indeed, wolves in sheep's skins."

JTF kills 50 terror suspects in Borno
Joint Task Force, JTF, weekend, killed no fewer than 50 suspected terrorists in Zabarmari Ward of Jere Local Government Area of Borno State, Maiduguri metropolis.
Meanwhile, the National Human Rights Commission, NHRC, has issued a report, accusing the JTF and the Jama’atu ahlus sunnah lid da’awati wal jihad, JALISWAJ, otherwise known as Boko Haram, of complicity in the massacre that recently took place at Baga, a community in Borno State.
Also, three suspected terrorists who were on their way to Jigawa State and other areas in the North with the aim of unleashing terror were arrested at the Borno Express Motor park on Saturday by volunteer youths a.k.a Civilian JTF.
Speaking on the suspected terrorists killed by men of the JTF, a security source said: “Over the weekend, we received an intelligence report that several Boko Haram terrorists have regrouped and were residing or hiding in Zabarmari Ward. We then mobilized our troops to the area, and on reaching the place, the suspected terrorists upon noticing our presence, began to shout ‘Allahu Akbar’ (Allah is Great) and started shooting at the JTF troops. We had no option than to repel the attacks while we succeeded in killing about 10 of the suspects.
“We decided not to take away any of their corpses as we left them in the area, but the following day when we mobilized our men to the area, we found out that hundreds of the terrorists were at one of the grave yards burying their dead members, and when we approached, some of them started shooting at our troops which led to the exchange of gun fire. We succeeded in killing over 40 of them.
“As I am talking to you now, our men are still in Zabarmari hunting for any suspected terrorists who might have escaped the deadly encounter”.
On the arrest of three suspected Boko Haram members who were on a suicide mission to Jigawa and other states in the North, the source said: “The men of the JTF are highly delighted with the zeal/effort being put in place by the vigilante youths popularly called Civilian JTF. Just yesterday, they were able to arrest three suspected Boko Haram suspects at the Borno Express motor park.
“They later handed them over to the JTF unit, and after torture, one of them who is now dead, said, they were from Bama Local Government Area on a suicide mission to Jigawa and other states in the North. In fact, the deceased before his death told us that, already, all their weapons of massive destruction have been transported to the target areas awaiting their arrival before they ran out of luck.”
The source added that though one of the arrested suspects was unconscious after the torture, the other suspect who seemed to be in stable condition promised to take JTF members to Bama to show them some of their members’ hideout.
Due to the total shut down of GSM network services in Borno State for almost two months, the JTF Spokesman, Lieutenant Colonel Sagir Musa and the Police Public Relations Officer, DSP Gideon Jubrin could not be reached for confirmation.
Baga killings: NHRC indicts JTF, Boko Haram
Meanwhile, the National Human Rights Commission, NHRC, has accused JTF and the Boko Haram sect, of complicity in the massacre that recently took place at Baga.
In an interim assessment report on the Baga incident of April 16 and the situation in the North-East region, the commission warned about a looming humanitarian crisis in the area.
Besides, NHRC said it has established that it was members of the Boko Haram sect that initially carried out multi-faceted attacks on law enforcement agents.
According to the report, “In addition to systematic attacks on law enforcement and internal security assets; JALISWAJ, is also credibly alleged to have attacked communities, churches and places of worship.
“Victims reported the shooting of family members by young men who spoke the local Kanuri language. In many communities, women were reportedly prevented from going to the farms. Some who ventured were attacked or abducted.”
The commission also said that it found incidents of forced marriage perpetrated by members of the sect and spoke with witnesses whose family members were abducted and forced into marriage.
On the part of the JTF, the commission, said it received several credibly attested allegations of gross violations by officials of the JTF, including allegations of summary executions, torture, arbitrary detention amounting to internment and outrages against the dignity of civilians, as well as rape.
“In particular, we have received persistent and credibly attested allegations of indiscriminate disposal of dead human remains by personnel of both JTF and the Borno State Environmental Protection Agency (BOSEPA).”
NHRC accused the JTF of indiscriminately detaining people, thus abridging their constitutionally guaranteed rights.
“Detainees are allegedly held in un-gazetted places of detention, with no or inadequate documentation and outside the safeguards provided for under applicable laws, including the Constitution of Nigeria and the African Charter on Human and Peoples’ Rights.
“They are not allowed access to family, counsel or medical personnel,” the commission alleged.
It explained that most of the allegations against JTF related to the question of proportionality of the use of force vis-à-vis standards applicable to the conduct of the armed forces in internal security operations.
However, the commission urged the federal government to constantly ensure the rotation and renewal of troops deployed in the north-east with a view to allowing members of such troops to have enough rest and recuperate.
The report noted that the farming communities of Borno State lost the 2013 planting season due to fear of Boko Haram attacks.
“The consequences of this are far-reaching. The immediate result is the likelihood of a food security and nutritional crises in Borno and surrounding states that dependent on the. Agricultural output from its Lake Chad Basis,” the report added.
It called on the federal government to urgently deploy mitigation mechanisms in order to avert a food security and nutritional crisis in the area.
